ABOUT
My name is Elizabeth Thompson. I live in Johannesburg, South Africa. I am Bachelor of Arts, Fine Arts Graduate from The University of the Witwatersrand. I am currently working as a Graphic designer at Browns, The Diamond Store.
I am an artist that currently resides in Johannesburg, South Africa. The foundation of my work is based mostly on feminist theories and ideals.
What drives me to create is the act of introspection and creating work that has a message. Each person has a circumference of influence around them, whether it be 5 people or 500 people. We are all responsible for what we do with that, especially as artists. Which is why I insist on making art with a purpose and a clear voice.
I bring ideas to life through alternatively working with traditional materials such as paint, drawing, photography and embroidery. I aim to create art that makes people stop, look and think deeper at the world around them as well as themselves. My work is about self-examination and discovery.
By choosing to create work that breaks down barriers and helps build community empathy.
I believe that it can also eliminate the unapproachable/elitist notions that most people seem to have with art and the art world. I strongly believe in the ideal that the more art we learn to create and share the more we can bring people together and dismantle societal bias.
I draw on my own experiences growing up in a family that always encouraged me to take up my own space in the world and be unapologetically proud of every aspect that makes me who I am. I want my work to inspire others to have that same strong voice and confidence in their own uniqueness.
Art is an integral part of who I am and I couldn’t stop creating even if I tried. It is something that I have always done and will continue to do for as long as physically possible.
I attended a Pre-college Studio Residency course at the Maryland Institute College of Art, where I studied Graphic Design and Black and white photography.
Additionally, I work part time as a Photographer for LiCaLo Photography
